Sleep and Testosterone

Sleep is one of the few areas where the research on testosterone is both intuitive and mixed. In a small laboratory study of 10 healthy young men, one week of 5-hour nights was followed by roughly 10 to 15 percent lower daytime testosterone. A later randomized study of young men did not find a significant drop after severe or long-term sleep restriction. The fair summary is that sleep clearly matters for how you feel and function, while its effect on hormone levels varies from study to study.

In young men, testosterone begins to rise after falling asleep and stays elevated until waking, and one review concluded that the rise needs at least about 3 hours of sleep with a normal structure. Adults are generally advised to sleep 7 or more hours per night, which is a sensible target whatever your hormone numbers turn out to be.

One topic deserves special attention: sleep apnea. It is linked to lower testosterone, and in one population-based study an estimated 82 percent of men with moderate to severe apnea had never been diagnosed. Treating apnea matters for its own sake, so heavy snoring or waking unrefreshed is a reason to see a doctor. The guides below start with the core evidence, then cover the indirect routes (screens, stress, alcohol, recovery) and practical routines. They are educational and not medical advice.
